Recipe: Rum, Rum Rudolph

You know what’s cool about the end of the year? It’s a time when the past holds as much value as the future. Sure, we’re all looking forward to that new Star Wars movie – but we also can’t wait to watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” for the umpteenth time. Yeah, Sia’s Christmas song is everywhere – but it’s on heavy rotation alongside Bing Crosby and Mariah Carey.

Whatever your generation, whatever your age, as the calendar page turns we all seem to acknowledge for a moment that traditions matter, and sometimes old things are pretty flippin’ awesome. Take the tiki drink, for instance. Although it has roots in the South Pacific, it was born in SoCal in the 1930s as sentimental American tourists longed to capture that fun, laid-back Polynesian vibe.

Oh yeah, it was also an excuse to drink. And to do it surrounded by totem poles, bamboo and hanging lights. Preferably, out of a ceramic hula mug overflowing with fruit slices and tiny umbrellas.

It was a ton of fun, it filled you with rum and in the 50s and 60s, it was all the rage. Sometimes, you just gotta admit that Grandma and Grandpa knew how to party.

Which is why Christmas has come early, my friends. If you’re looking for something to breathe life into your holiday party – or to make a splash at somebody else’s – look no further. Our Hawaiian Holiday Punch recipe is easy to make and is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

It’s kinda impossible to even say the word “tiki” without smiling. Try it. Right now. See what I mean?!?

So this holiday season, dust off Aunt Edna’s favorite punch bowl, cue Bing Crosby’s “Mele Kalikimaka,” and raise a toast to traditions both old and new.
